What's even stranger, I previously used an Oxygen 49 also M-Audio , and it was recognized. Of course it worked like a regular midi controller. Overall the keyboard feels pretty solid, I am glad I went with this one instead of a cheaper one. If the device is not working in Windows, it cannot work in Sonar. I have the same problem with my new axiom 49 2nd gen! If you care a lot of expressive playing TruTouch or you want to control everything from the keyword HiperLink , you could enjoy more the Axiom Pro. Just Google M-Audio Axiom Keyboard Manual.
I am not overly concerned about all the controls but it would be nice to be able to use them should I wish too. After having to learn it the hard way, right? I am also considering the purchase of an Axiom Pro or Second Generation and had the same questions and concerns, particularly about replacement parts for the Pro which, as I understand it, has the best piano-like keybed of the bunch. I think we need to wait till they release a fix for it in 8. While inside , hit F10 or go to your settings , click on your Axiom 49 in the Input section, and click enable. I checked out the enigma program that works for the 1st gen, and it doesnt recognize my keyboard either. Every time I open Sonar, I get the error message below. It works as advertised with ableton live lite 7, it is pretty easy to figure out how to setup the controls. Please contact the application's support team for more information.
Also considering the Novation Impulse, which has a similar keybed. As you can see from the views, this is an area which causes people a lot of confusion! But Axiom 61 is also a great choice, as you can see. I have yet to find a source of repair parts from anyone other than buying a dead keyboard and scavenging it. Just do a factory reset on the axiom and try again. Not only has semi-weighted keys, but also has its technology TruTouch. What I have to say about this Keyboard Controller, is quality.
Unfortunately, the Axiom DirectLink script got broken with Live 8. What I should have said: In Windows, go to Control Panel Open Device Manager look under Sound, Video and Gaming controllers Your controller needs to show up there. Including how to link 3rd party software, vst instruments, etc. If it does not, the problem is not with Sonar Could be cable, bad controller, bad port, no Windows driver, etc. I see no such category under audio devices. It seems that the mod wheel works for some things but not others.
The velocity sensitive keys work good, the sliders that people say feel cheap do in fact feel cheap but it doesnt really affect their performance, they work just fine. From my research, I thought Enigma was my answer to get my Axiom set up how I wanted. It can't be that I've exceeded the number of devices allowed because the Oxygen works with the same setup. No need to get all pissy with me about it. So how do you know the difference between the first and second generations of the Axiom series? I have looked at the other threads but they all seem to refer to Axiom Pro my Axiom is just the base model 1st gen. The knobs work well for controlling the pan of the channel, and the drum pads work for controlling drums, although I dont find them to be necessary as this can also be done using the velocity sensitive keys. Just wanted to get the word out to you all.

The Axiom Pro 61 is really great for those who care a lot about expressive playing. Notice on the images, there are titles above certain keys on the left and right far-end keys of the keyboard. They keep a good, solid workflow. I have the same problem as some others are reporting in that I have no mod wheel, my searches tell that this device is class compliant and should need no drivers, but the mod wheel is important.
